2021 NSC Updates
JANUARY 2021 CONFERENCES
Due to the on-going concerns regarding COVID-19 and the uncertain environment for January, Texas A&M University has decided to host January 2021 New Student Conferences (NSC) as a fully virtual experience. Students and families/guests will not come to the Texas A&M campus for the NSC. Through a virtual format, we will provide content for students that creates ways to foster virtual communities to ease the transition to Texas A&M.
Students will receive access to their NSC content several days prior to their scheduled NSC date in January. Students will then review the information at their leisure before participating in live sessions on both days of their NSC. More details about the timing of the live sessions will be sent in December.
Families will receive access to virtual content to review at your own pace leading up to the NSC and can participate in live Q&A sessions the week of your students NSC.
If students need to change conference dates or edit registration information, complete these processes in the Applicant Information System (AIS) at applicant.tamu.edu. Edits should not be made to a registration within 5 business days prior to a scheduled NSC. If students need to reschedule close to their scheduled date, they should submit a request via AIS, Contact Us – NSC Registration.
SUMMER 2021 CONFERENCES
At this time, we are planning for an in-person experience for 2021 Summer New Student Conferences (NSC). However, this may change due to the evolving nature of COVID-19 impacts and won't be known until April. We will communicate with students registered for an NSC via email and our website regarding any updates or changes.
If you have any questions, please contact New Student and Family Programs at email@example.com or 979-845-5826.
Virtual NSC Frequently Asked Questions
Updated August 3, 2020 11:00 a.m. CDT
No. Online orientation is a series of modules which must be completed PRIOR to your virtual NSC. Online orientation is released mid-May and provides a basic overview of information, preparing you for more detailed content shared within the NSC format. Online orientation is a registration hold and if you do not complete it, you cannot proceed with your Virtual NSC.
Your NSC date is the same as your originally scheduled in-person NSC. You can change your conference date as long as dates are available on the NSC registration website, accessible through the Applicant Information System (AIS) at applicant.tamu.edu. As conferences are filled, they are removed from the site and are no longer available due to capacity limits.
Maintaining original dates allows us to set-up virtual communities for you to connect with peers, upperclassmen, and staff. Additionally this aids us in managing the system to support students and families effectively.
New Student Conferences scheduled for August have formally been changed as follows:
- August 12-13 NSC moved to July 16-17
- August 18-19 NSC moved to July 21-22
With the move to virtual NSCs, we believe it’s within the best interest of our students to adjust NSC dates currently scheduled for August to be earlier in the summer.
If this change causes a significant conflict for students, you may request to change your NSC date in the Applicant Information System (AIS). AIS updates available seats in real-time as students change NSC dates.
If your high school graduation is scheduled to take place on either day of your scheduled NSC dates, you will likely need to reschedule your Virtual NSC. You will need to be present for live meetings on both days as well as course registration in order to complete your Virtual NSC.
You can change your conference date as long as dates are available on the NSC registration website, accessible through the Applicant Information System (AIS) at applicant.tamu.edu.
You will receive an email to your personal email address with information on how to access the virtual NSC materials about 3-5 days before your originally scheduled NSC date.

Family members and guests will have access to their own version of virtual NSC content. They can also participate in various Q&A sessions with students, staff, and current Aggie family members.
The virtual NSC experience will mimic the in-person NSC in many ways. Several sessions will be recorded as if they are presented live during the NSC. You will watch these sessions and have access to the PowerPoints for review. There will be opportunities to get your questions answered by orientation leaders and through virtual office hours held by many of our campus services.
Students will have a virtual academic advising time on Day 2 of their original NSC date. Details of signing up for a specific time will be provided at a later date.
Every student (both Freshmen and Transfer) will receive a refund of $50 from the student NSC fee. Any additional family members/guests fees which were paid will be fully refunded. Students enrolled in Fall 2020 courses will have these refunds applied to the Fall 2020 Tuition Statement; we anticipate the refund will post the week of August 10th. For students who do not enroll in the Fall Semester and therefore will not have a tuition bill, we will facilitate a manual refund. In late September the $50 student NSC fee refund plus applicable family member/guest fee refunds will be returned to your original form of payment.
We want to provide further details regarding the fee for NSC so you better understand how your fee was utilized.
The breakdown of your New Student Conference Fee ($225) is as follows:
- $43 dollars to the Office of Admissions
- $117 for Student Programming (New Student & Family Programs)
- $55 for Family Member Programming (New Student & Family Programs)
- $10 for NSC Parking Permit (Transportation Services)
Of the $117 allocated towards the student portion of the NSC fee it generally covers: facilities, meals, staff salaries, student employee pay, printed materials (signage, publications), promotional type items (t-shirt, bag, decal, pen), communication platforms, operations, and necessary equipment to run student specific programming. Given the nature of a virtual NSC, some specific costs were not realized (i.e. meals and facilities) but different costs were incurred (i.e. technology, video recording, mailing of materials). Based on prior year expenses it was determined approximately $40 of the in-person costs would not be realized in 2020. Other expenses generally covered by NSC fees, along with new expenses in a virtual environment, were incurred in the course of supporting virtual NSCs and providing programming specifically for incoming students.
Of the $55/adult family member portion of the NSC fee, it generally covers: meals, staff salaries, student employee pay, printed materials, facilities, communication platform, technology, promotional items, and programming across multiple years. By eliminating the additional family/guest fees there was a net saving of $350,000 for families who participated in NSCs. While some of the anticipated costs did not occur, expenses were still realized for staffing, technology, videography, communication platforms, mailings, and operations.
All parking permits ($10) for the New Student Conference are being refunded. Fees for any additional NSC parking permits purchased will also be refunded.
Students who are faced with financial difficulties as a result of the COVID-19 health crisis and are reconsidering their decision to attend Texas A&M University are highly encouraged to contact an admissions advisor at one of our Prospective Student Centers, admissions.tamu.edu/psc, before cancelling admission. We will consider refunding NSC fees for persons who must cancel their attendance for circumstances outside of their control, such as one or both parents being unemployed during the COVID-19 crisis resulting in financial changes that preclude attendance, medical emergencies, or other COVID-19 related circumstances. Appeals can be provided in the Applicant Information System. Student should login, select Contact Us, subject NSC Appeal, and provide a request for a refund detailing their extenuating circumstances. Supporting documentation should be uploaded via the ‘My Documents’ tab and labeled ‘Appeal Correspondence.’ Please be aware that every request may not be approved.
All NSC on-campus accommodations (this does NOT include the A&M Hotel & Conference Center) have been automatically canceled.
NSC Housing is not charged in advance. Therefore, there is no NSC Housing refund to provide.
Yes, Transportation Services will refund parking permits for New Student Conferences. Exact details of how and when are to be determined.
Texas A&M continues to closely monitor the situation, relying on local and state health officials, as well as members of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, Centers for Disease and Preparedness and the World Health Organization. Depending on the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 we are uncertain when campus services will fully resume in-person. For now, you can take a virtual tour through our Texas A&M Visitor Center: https://www.tamu.edu/visitors/index.html
No, your Fall Housing is not connected to your NSC Housing reservation. If you have questions regarding your fall on-campus housing, please contact the Residence Life Housing Assignments Office. They can be reached at 979-845-4744. You may also email firstname.lastname@example.org.
While the COVID-19 situation may look different later this summer, the institution could not wait to make a decision due to time needed to set up the necessary infrastructure to execute a new format. It was already determined most NSCs would have to be moved virtually due to guidelines and recommendations for large gatherings. Given each NSCs has 700 students and up to 1200 guests in close proximity to each other during programs, we could not put individuals at risk of spreading the virus. Moving to virtual NSCs for all incoming students allow staff to focus efforts in one direction with NSCs beginning in only 7 weeks.
